Here is the only before picture I could find of my banister. Sorry it is a little small...you get the picture though, light oak.
I decided to stain the banister a dark color and paint the spindles bright white. I immediately did not like how it turned out. After working so hard on it, I decided to live with it for a few weeks and then decide whether or not to change it again.
Now a few months later, I still do not like the stark contrast of the dark banister and bright white spindles. Other people have banisters with the same contrast and I absolutely love it (hence the reason I went with this look). It just didn't look too great in my space, probably because there is little natural light near my banister. It got dressed up with a baseboard and a little decorative moulding. I truly love mouldings!!! My banister is now a creamy white. The new color makes the space feel a lot brighter and happier. I am linking this post with...

Thank you!!!
Yes Emily i love it way better all white!!!
ReplyDeleteI really dislike the oak wood . It looks fantastic painted white!!
I think the dark railing works if the staircase is in a grand foyer.
I need to change my banister. I was going to do the dark on the top and white on the bottom, but now I think I may stay with all white. Love your transformation!
ReplyDeleteVery pretty and fresh!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog earlier this week. :)
Love it white!! I have an oak banister too I would love for it to be all white. Great job girl!
ReplyDeleteLooks great Emily!
ReplyDeleteBright, fresh and cheerful! I liked the dark stain too but I know what you mean - with a lack of natural light a dark stain can bring down a space. Painting spindles is a pain in the butt isn't it? But SO worth it! What a difference from your before photo!

ReplyDeleteVery fresh and bright looking Emily. I love it! Martina
ReplyDeleteDid you prime it first? I need to do the same thing with my banister but I am putting it off because there is carpet under the spindles. Maybe your fresh and clean after will be the inspiration I needed!
ReplyDeleteThis is a project I need to tackle too. Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteI actually like the black, mine is all white too and I'm thinking about doing the black contrast. What black paint did you use?
